Howdy 🤖🐶 friends! Ever since we published our post on doggy hydration for hiking we’ve been getting some great feedback on the socials – it turns out we’re not the only ones who are a little neurotic when it comes to making sure our best buddies have the best and most sophisticated water delivery systems. One question we often get is, “What kind of stainless steel water bottle system do you recommend”? That’s a great question that really gets at the root of who we are here at Cyber Snout.

For the longest time I just used a plain old plastic water bottle for biking with my buddy Jean-luc.

This thing works great, but it is made of plastic which might not be the best choice for the doggers and the environment.

I never thought twice about this bottle but then around ten years ago my wife got a shiny new Yeti water container with it’s cutting edge double walled vacuum sealed tech and I had to rethink my relationship with water transportation. Fast forward a decade and past some metaphorical water under the bridge and I’m all about ditching plastic and going with the little bit of vacuum in between to pieces of stainless steel for me and my doggo. That’s why I’m thrilled to bring you a review of the HEMLI 64oz Water Travel system for dogs. This thing is a beast and if you have a big, or really thirsty, dog, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

When it comes to choosing a water bottle for your dog, there are a few things you need to take into consideration.

  • The first thing is the size of the bottle. You must make sure you choose a bottle that’s big enough for your dog. 64oz is a lot of water. That’s one of the things that sets the HEMLI apart.
  • The second thing to consider is how easy the bottle is to use. You need to be able to access the water easily, and you need to be able to fill it up without any fuss.
  • You need to make sure the bottle is leakproof. The last thing you want is for your dog’s water bottle to leak all over their backpack (or your car).
  • Thermal regulation of internal H2O temps is also a crucial factor. Just like humans, doggos love a refreshing gulp of freezing cold water when they’ve been trekking hard on the hot trail. If your water carrier can maintain temps over hours then it’s gonna make Mr. (or Missus) Poochie super happy.
  • Condensation Control: You’ve filled your canine water bottle to the brim with ice and water and you throw it in your backpack before hitting the trail. After enjoying some sun and dirt with your doggy you open your pack to give them a drink and… OH NO! The ice has melted and condensation has made your bag soggy. This is a nightmare but something no one should have to live through.

What is the material used in the construction of the Hemli dog water bottle?

When it comes to keeping our pups hydrated on the go, the Hemli dog water bottle is a great option. This bottle is made from high-quality materials that are safe for your dog to use. The bottle is made from a vacuum sealed, double walled stainless steel that will keep your dog’s water cold for hours. The bottle also has a detachable bowl that is easy to clean and is perfect for on-the-go pups.

The Physics of Double-Walled Vacuum Sealed Containers

Let’s take a brief aside to look at the deceptively simple and powerful tech behind the HEMLI.

diagram of how cool double walled vacuum sealed containers are.
So much better than freezing a plastic water bottle. amirite?
  • A hot or cold beverage enters the bottle.
  • The insulated layer within the double walls of the bottle prevents heat transfer, helping the beverage maintain its temperature.
  • The vacuum seal prevents condensation, so the outside of the bottle stays dry.
  • The stainless steel material doesn’t react with the beverage, so there’s no altered taste.

Want to get even more into the weeds? I find this stuff fascinating so bear with me. If you don’t care about why the doggos water stays cold for hours and hours in the HEMLI at the subatomic level, then please read on.

A vacuum-sealed bottle works on the principle of thermal insulation. Thermal insulation prevents the transfer of heat from one area to another. In the case of a vacuum-sealed bottle, the space between the inner and outer wall of the bottle is evacuated, creating a vacuum.

Heat transfer occurs through three main mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation.

  1. Conduction is the process by which heat is directly transmitted through a substance when there is a difference of temperature between adjoining regions, without movement of the material. In a vacuum, there are no (or very few) particles to vibrate and pass the heat along, so conduction is minimized.
  2. Convection is the movement of heat within fluids (liquids or gases) caused by the variation of the fluid’s density and the action of gravity. The vacuum also prevents convection because there is no fluid (air) in the space to carry the heat.
  3. Radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles that cause ionization. The reflective coating on the inner wall of the bottle reflects radiant heat, preventing it from being absorbed and warming your drink.

As for preventing condensation, when warm air comes into contact with a cold surface, it cools down and loses its capacity to hold water vapor. As a result, excess water vapor condenses on the cold surface. However, because the outer surface of a vacuum-sealed bottle doesn’t get cold (due to the insulation provided by the vacuum), there is no surface for the warm air to condense on, and thus no condensation forms.

I was surprised by how comfortable the shoulder strap was. 64 oz of water weighs approximately 4.16 pounds plus the bottle itself and the snacks I had stashed in the pouch and we’re talking close to seven pounds (horrible Will Smith movie btw). It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I’ve strapped less to my person for hikes, and if the weight distribution is wrong or the material digs in, it can be super painful after just 30 minutes. I could wear the HEMLI for almost two miles before getting slightly uncomfortable around my collarbone. It is bouncy, so don’t expect to be able to trail run with this bad boy.

If you’re looking for a dog water bottle that’s easy to use and perfect for walking, look no further than the HEMLI Dog Water Bottle. • Camping: I have a colleague who goes to Flaming Gorge Reservoir every summer for two weeks. There is no flowing water where he likes to camp so he has to pack in 14 days worth of H2O for him and his pups. The dude absolutely loves the HEMLI.
  • Hiking: Like I mentioned above, the strap is surprisingly comfortable. I would recommend the HEMLI dog hydration system for shorter hikes with multiple doggos where you know you’ll need a lot of water but don’t have to shoulder the burden for more than an hour or so.
  • HOT HOT 🔥 Days at the Dog Park: People are so lovely: on 90+ degree days, I always see at least one person carrying a giant, two-gallon plastic water bottle at the dog park near my house. They freely dole out their water to all thirsty pooches in attendance. But it would be nicer if they could give those doggers cold water. Be a hero at your dog park: grab a HEMLI and fill it with ice-cold water.

Final Verdict and Summary of This Cool Water Tech

I bought this product for my golden retriever, who loves to go on long walks and hikes with me. I was looking for a convenient and durable way to provide him with water and food on the go, and this bottle seemed to fit the bill.

I was impressed by the quality and design of the bottle. It is made of stainless steel, which keeps the water cold for hours, even in the summer heat. The bottle has two detachable bowls, one for water and one for food, which are easy to clean and store. The bottle also comes with a carrying case, which has a shoulder strap and a mesh pocket for extra items.

Sangria has come on so many hikes with me and my family. I think the HEMLI is a hit with her!

The bottle is very easy to use. I just fill it with water and ice, screw on the chug lid, and put it in the case. When my dog needs a drink, I unscrew the middle section and pour some water into the bowl. When he needs a snack, I unscrew the bottom section and give him some kibble or treats. The bottle also doubles as a water bottle for me, so I can share a sip with my furry friend.

The only drawbacks of this product are its weight and size. The bottle is quite heavy when full, so it can be a bit cumbersome to carry around. The bottle is also quite large, so it may not fit in some cup holders or backpacks. The bottle may also be too big for some small dogs to drink from comfortably.

Overall, I think this is a great product for dog owners who love to travel with their pets. It is convenient, versatile, and durable, and it provides cold water and food for both you and your dog. It is a bit pricey, but I think it is worth it for the quality and functionality. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to keep their dog hydrated and happy on the go.
